Tofu

Having a healthy new appetizer can be fun and satisfying. Although tofu can be boring, it is also healthy and versatile.  Tofu often absorbs the unique flavor of the food and seasonings that accompany it. And the soy base means that it packs plenty of protein.

These spicy tofu bites are a fun way to add some flavor to your tofu while still being able to melt some pounds. With only twenty minutes to prepare and minimal effort, there is no reason that you could not enjoy this tasty tofu appetizer tonight.

Serves: 4

Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients for Spicy Tofu Bites:

–              14 oz. firm tofu

–              1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

–              1 teaspoon soy sauce

–              1 teaspoon cumin seeds

–              2 ¼ tablespoons olive oil

–              1 tablespoon hoisin sauce

–              ½ tablespoon Sriracha sauce

–              ¼ teaspoon ginger powder

–              ¼ teaspoon garlic powder

–              1 tablespoon chopped cilantro

–              1 tablespoon chopped scallion

Directions:
  1. Place the firm tofu on a plate to drain for 10 minutes.
  2. While the tofu is draining: crush the cumin, red pepper flakes, garlic powder and chili powder with a mortar and pestle.
  3. Combine ¼ teaspoon olive oil, Sriracha sauce, hoisin sauce, and soy sauce in a bowl.
  4. Once the tofu has been thoroughly drained, cut it into a ¾-inch thick steaks.
  5. Heat the remaining olive oil in a skillet over high heat. Place the tofu steaks in the hot oil.
  6. Sprinkle the tofu with half of crushed dried spices and let the tofu cook for 4-5 minutes.
  7. When the bottom of your tofu is golden brown, carefully flip each steak over. Then brush the tofu with half of the prepared hoisin sauce mix and sprinkle with remaining dry spices. Cook for three minutes more.
  8. Flip the tofu steaks again and brush with remaining sauce. Remove the tofu, placing it onto a cutting board and cut into matching cubes. Arrange the cubes on a plate and garnish with chopped cilantro and scallions.
