Stockholm is a wondrous city filled with exciting ways for visitors to enjoy themselves. Recently, I had my first trip to Stockholm on a staycation (staying at a friend’s flat), and I was struck by the many ways one can experience this enchanting capital.
1. By Boat
The best way to see the city is by boat because there are waterways that brings you into the heart of the bustling capital city. While I was there, we had the good fortune to know a couple who brought us out on their boat. Once we were whisked out of the city, we spent the day island hopping in the archipelago that lies just outside of the city.
2. Parks
The city is filled with glorious parks featuring flowing fountains and picturesque statues. We made a couple of sandwiches and spread out a blanket for a picnic in the sun. This is an excellent way to save a few bucks and experience the city.
On another occasion, we sat on a park bench by the sea. We sat and observed a family of Swans that seemed to feel so at home that there was no problem getting close enough to observe there every move.
3. Bicycle
Stockholm is a bicycle friendly city and for those who love to hop on a bike and zip around town. There are especially beautiful views when pedaling around the harborfront near sundown. It is one of the absolute best ways to traverse this island city. It affords the opportunity to get close to the major sites and stop along the way to savor the moment.
4. Tram
Stockholm has a fabulous public transportation system and it is one of the highlights. The system is user-friendly, and therefore, easy for tourists to take advantage. They have old restored trams and more modern ones. Forget shelling out a ton of money for a fancy tour. For a few kroners, you can see a good deal of the city without having to leave the comfort of your tram.
5. Bars and Cafes
Not only does Stockholm have a bustling nightlife, it is a great place to enjoy café culture.
The old town square is a picturesque place to spend the afternoon sitting outside at a café sipping delightful concoctions while indulging in an age-old occupation at a sidewalk cafe: people-watching. The cobblestone streets are a reminder of the deep history that Stockholm has to offer. The Old City (Gamla Stan) has the feel of many old centers of Europe, but with a distinct twist.
