While playing around with basil and booze, I discovered this new twist on an old favorite. This drink is a fun and refreshing cocktail inspired by the Dark and Stormy and the rest of the Mule family, the Moscow Mule being the most popular. It is easy to make and will please a wide range of cocktail enthusiasts and people who simply like to get a good buzz on.
Ingredients
- Ice
- 2 Lime Wedges
- 15-20 basil leaves
- Ginger Beer
- Sugar or Simple Syrup (optional)
- 1 oz. Silver Rum
- 1 oz. Dark Rum
Stormy Basil Mule Preparation
It is best to use a Copper Mule Mug. If not, a highball glass will work.
-To begin, drop two lime wedges and your basil leaves at the bottom of your glass and add a healthy splash of ginger beer to aid your muddling. If you prefer drinks on the sweeter side, you may want to consider dropping in a half-teaspoon of sugar (or preferably simple syrup).
-Muddle the Basil and lime until thoroughly masticated (approximately 30 seconds)
-Fill cup with ice
-Add a one-ounce shot of both dark and light rum. For this particular drink, I used Bacardi Superior Silver and Bacardi Oakheart. But free to adjust according to taste. If you love the taste of Captain and the value of Shellback Silver this may make for a better combination.
-Fill your cup ¾ of the way with Ginger beer. I used Fentiman’s “Botanically Brewed” Ginger Beer. However, you could be well off using Gosling’s or some other craft ginger beer such as Fever-Tree. If you want to get really wild you could use an alcoholic ginger beer such as Stone’s Ginger Joe.
-When you have added all of the contents, give the combination a few gentle stirs with a mixing spoon. Stir well enough to pull the contents off of the bottom of the mug but not so hard that you flatten the carbonation.
-Once everything is well mixed, top the drink off with ginger beer.
-Garnish with a lime wedge and a sprig of basil.
